Autumn’s in the Air

Ember Days—September 18, 20, 21

Folklore has it that the weather on each of these three days foretells the weather for three successive

months; that is, Wednesday, September 18, forecasts the weather for October; Friday, September 20,

for November; and Saturday, September 21, for December. Read the full description of Ember Days.

Harvest Home—September 22

In Europe, the conclusion of the harvest each autumn was once marked by festivals of fun, feasting,

and thanksgiving known as “Harvest Home.” It was also a time to hold elections, pay workers, and

collect rents. These festivals usually took place around the time of the autumnal equinox.

Autumnal Equinox—September 22

The word equinox comes from the Latin words for “equal night.” Around the time of the autumnal

equinox, there are equal periods of daylight and darkness as the Sun appears to cross the celestial

equator from north to south.

As the weather cools, you’ll find the Sun setting a little earlier each evening. See your local Sun rise

and set times.

It is this changing amount of light that sets off a chemical reaction in trees and causes leaves to

change color. Read more about fall foliage.

Fall Forecast

This year, most of North America—with some exceptions—will enjoy a pleasant fall with warmer-

than-normal temperatures.

Here’s a peek into fall with our 2013 fall forecast.

As we move into November, all this will change as we brace for (or embrace!) a colder and snowier-

than-average winter.

I would rather sit on a pumpkin, and have
it all to myself, than be crowded on a velvet cushion.
~ Henry David Thoreau

Autumn seemed to arrive suddenly that year. The
morning of the first September was
crisp and golden as an apple.
~ J.K. Rowling

Love the trees until their leaves fall off, then
encourage them to try again next year.
~ Chad Sugg

In the garden, Autumn is, indeed the crowning glory of
the year, bringing us the fruition of months of thought and
and toil. And at no season, safe perhaps in Daffodil time,
do we get such superb color effects as from August to November.
-- Rose G. Kingsley

Caramel Apples -- YUM - a season delight!

Such beautiful animals he did create.

And one would have to wonder what type of
wagon this did come from and wonder
how old?

I love covered bridges and they just glow in the Fall.

Your cute for the day!

One of my favorites, and where is the ice cream, or
I would even settle for some Cool Whip and coffee too of course!

How neat are the old bicycles.

Below is a delivery I received yesterday from a dear
friend and classmate of many years. She has always
been there -- just recently moved back to our home town
and we have been becoming reacquainted and catching
up as she has been in another state with her career in
teaching and writing. She is now enjoying
retirement just as I. I can't quit looking at this - so like
her to be so thoughtful and I just had to share.
This was taken in our home in the dining room.
